How to Convert an Annual Salary to an Hourly Rate
To convert annual salary to an hourly equivalent, divide gross annual pay by the number of paid work hours in the year. A $62,400 salary over 2,080 hours—40 hours per week for 52 weeks—equals $30 per hour. The result changes if paid hours, unpaid leave, or the salary’s included compensation differ.
Use the actual work schedule
The formula is hourly equivalent = annual gross salary ÷ paid hours per year. If the schedule is 40 hours each week for 52 paid weeks, the denominator is 2,080. For 37.5 hours a week over 52 weeks, it is 1,950. Use the number of hours you are expected to work and be paid for, not a default that does not match the job.
Worked example with USD
For a $62,400 annual salary and 2,080 paid hours, divide $62,400 by 2,080 to get $30 per hour. If the employee has 10 unpaid weeks and works 40 hours during the other 42 weeks, the same salary divided by 1,680 scheduled hours equals about $37.14 per hour of scheduled work. That second figure is a comparison metric, not a change to the written salary.
Decide what compensation to include
A base salary is not the same as total compensation. Bonuses, commissions, employer health benefits, retirement contributions, paid leave, and equity can have different values and conditions. For a base-pay comparison, divide base salary only. For total compensation, list each component separately and avoid treating uncertain bonuses or noncash benefits as guaranteed hourly wages.
Compare paid time and benefits
Two roles with similar hourly equivalents may differ in paid holidays, vacation, health premiums, retirement matching, schedule predictability, and commute time. An hourly figure alone does not capture those differences. If you compare an offer, use the expected paid schedule and ask whether overtime, on-call time, or variable hours are separate from the salary. A $62,400 salary divided by 2,080 hours is $30, but a role that regularly requires unpaid extra hours has a lower effective rate per hour actually worked.
Keep gross pay separate from take-home pay
This calculation uses gross annual wages before tax withholding, benefit deductions, and other payroll deductions. It does not estimate net pay. Federal, state, and local withholding depend on personal circumstances and payroll settings; check pay statements and official tax guidance rather than applying one assumed percentage.
Use the reverse calculation thoughtfully
An hourly-to-salary calculator usually multiplies hourly rate by weekly hours and paid weeks. To compare a salaried offer, reverse that relationship using expected work hours. The result is an arithmetic equivalent for a stated schedule, not a legal classification or determination of overtime eligibility. For a fair comparison, use the same definition of annual pay on both sides and write down whether unpaid leave, bonuses, or different weekly schedules are included.
| Schedule assumption | Paid hours/year | Annual salary | Hourly equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40 hours × 52 weeks | 2,080 | $62,400 | $30.00 |
| 37.5 hours × 52 weeks | 1,950 | $62,400 | $32.00 |
Frequently asked questions
