How an Auto Loan Amount Financed Is Calculated

The amount financed is generally the purchase balance covered by the loan after the down payment and trade-in credit, plus any taxes or fees included in the contract. The exact line items depend on the deal. Check the buyer’s order and loan documents rather than treating the vehicle’s sticker price as the loan principal.

A planning equation

A useful estimate is amount financed = negotiated vehicle price + taxes and fees financed − cash down payment − trade-in equity applied. Trade-in equity is trade-in value minus any payoff on the old loan. A negative trade-in balance can increase the new amount financed if it is rolled into the new contract.

A worked example

Suppose a negotiated vehicle price is $28,000, taxes and fees total $2,100, the buyer pays $4,000 down, and a trade-in is worth $6,000 with a $2,000 loan payoff. The trade-in contributes $4,000 of equity. The estimated amount financed is $28,000 + $2,100 − $4,000 − $4,000 = $22,100. Actual contracts may itemize additional products or adjustments.

Items to inspect before signing

Compare the agreed price, taxes, title and registration fees, optional add-ons, down payment, trade-in allowance, and old-loan payoff. Ask which optional products are included and whether they are financed. A larger amount financed increases payment and interest for a given rate and term. Do not compare offers by monthly payment alone.

Down payment and total cost

A down payment reduces the principal borrowed, but it also uses cash that might be needed for other expenses. The payment and total-interest estimate depend on APR and term too. Longer terms may lower the scheduled monthly payment while extending repayment. Read the Truth in Lending disclosures and compare the total of payments and finance charge.

Use the calculator as a cross-check

Enter the estimated amount financed, APR, and term to model the payment schedule. The calculator does not verify the dealer’s figures, include unknown contract fees, or decide whether a vehicle fits your budget. Reconcile its inputs with the final written contract before relying on the result.

Frequently asked questions

Does a trade-in always reduce the loan balance?

Only its net equity does. Subtract any payoff on the old vehicle from its trade-in value.

Are dealer add-ons part of amount financed?

They can be if included in the signed contract; inspect the itemized buyer’s order and disclosures.
